The importance of syntactic structures can be observed in both spoken and written communication because meaning often depends on the way linguistic units are arranged. The term “syntax” originates from the Greek word syntaxis, meaning arrangement or coordination [Tallerman 2014: 5]. Since ancient times, philosophers and grammarians have attempted to explain how words combine to express complete thoughts. However, modern syntactic studies developed more systematically during the twentieth century with the emergence of structural linguistics and later generative grammar. Linguists recognized that language is not a random collection of words but a highly organized system governed by grammatical rules and cognitive principles.
Syntactic structures serve as the foundation of sentence formation. Through syntax, speakers are able to express actions, states, relations, emotions, commands, and questions. The arrangement of linguistic units determines grammatical correctness as well as semantic interpretation. For example, the sentences “The student wrote the article” and “The article wrote the student” contain identical lexical items, yet their meanings differ completely because of syntactic organization [Kroeger 2022: 91]. This demonstrates that syntax directly influences semantic interpretation. One of the major linguistic characteristics of syntactic structures is hierarchy.
